Burt Munro replica bikes join Classic Motorcycle Mecca collection
Fans of Invercargill’s legend of speed, Burt Munro, now have even more of a reason to pay Classic Motorcycle Mecca a visit.
While this year’s Burt Munro Challenge was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic, those keen to head south to pay tribute to the legend affectionately known as The World’s Fastest Indian will discover authentic memorabilia from the Sir Anthony Hopkins film of the same name thanks to the Invercargill City Council and Southland Museum and Art Gallery.
Transport World operations manager Courtney Russell says two bikes used in the movie, starring the Oscar-winning Welsh actor, can now be discovered by guests to Classic Motorcycle Mecca. Authentic Burt Munro memorabilia including original photos adds to the new display’s appeal.
“Invercargill is well-known not only throughout New Zealand, but around the world in automotive enthusiast circles, for its passion for everything wheeled and Burt Munro is a huge part of that,” she says. “The annual Burt Munro Challenge is huge, typically bringing hundreds of visitors to the city every year, and as a classic motorbike museum we’re really pleased to be able to enhance our tribute to Burt.”
