Steampunk Showcase coming to Classic Motorcycle Mecca soon
A visit to Classic Motorcycle Mecca is like taking a step into yesterday – or an alternate reality. Together with the Southern Society of Steampunk Steamologists, we’re bringing something a little bit different to our collection.
We have joined forces to bring you a taste of the wonderful world of steampunk. The Steampunk Showcase pop-up exhibit will be on display at the leading classic motorcycle museum in the Southern Hemisphere between October 29, 2021 and April 22, 2022.
So, for the uninitiated, what is steampunk? We’re glad you asked! Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction, which blends futuristic technology with plenty of 19th-century industrial vibes. It’s often set in a different reality: either an alternative version of the Victorian era, or the Wild West. Think Jules Verne or H. G. Wells and you’re on the right track ... a steam-powered one, of course.
The steampunk perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art is truly unique – and the fun of it all means it’s only growing in popularity.
Here at Classic Motorcycle Mecca, we’re all about transporting our visitors to a different time and place – so we think our museum is the perfect fit to showcase the wares of southern steampunk enthusiasts.
Thank you very much to the Southern Society of Steampunk Steamologists for partnering with us to bring guests this pop-up exhibit. Here, visitors will discover teapot racers (the society is renowned for its annual teapot racing event through Invercargill’s very own Queens Park) and other steampunk-based items from around 30 exhibitors: including guest exhibitor Gary Mikkelson’s Roper steam bicycle, art by Brenda Nyhof and an assortment of intriguing designer steampunk attire.
