Speedway Spectaculars – JAP 500cc motorbike

22nd December 2021

This Dave McKenzie-owned JAP 500cc motorbike is sure to be an eye-catcher amongst the Speedway Spectaculars temporary display here at Classic Motorcycle Mecca.

These motors were first raced in 1928, practically at the dawn of the sport of speedway itself, and they continued to dominate on the world stage for generations, winning world speedway championship titles up until the mid-1960s.

Kiwi world champions Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger all raced JAP machines.

This particular bike, now owned and generously loaned to our Invercargill motorbike museum by Dave McKenzie for the Speedway Spectaculars exhibit, was raced by Ernie Brown at Aranui Speedway in Christchurch during the early 1950s.
