1959 BMW R26 Motorcycle
The level of comfort afforded by the BMW R26 was heralded as a revelation for riders, and that – coupled with improvements to the engine seen in the R25 – made this bike a success for the German-based motoring manufacturer.
Sharing the same innovations in chassis developments – Earles front forks and swinging arm rear suspension – that made the R50 and R69 models (introduced the same year) such a success, the BMW R26 boasted sensational suspension for riders.
The BMW R26 had a cracking top speed of 128kph (80mph) for the time period.
Sales of the bike reflected its exceptional quality, with more than 30,000 of the machines sold during the five years it featured in the BMW catalogue. The R27 eventually susperseded the BMW R26 in 1960.
