1973 George Begg FM5

An heir and a spare – the royals do it, and so too did the team working out of George Begg’s ‘Toyshop’ in Drummond.

  • The second FM5 monocoque built by Begg, the 1973 version had several changes in comparison to the first car’s iteration and was destined to be a spare, in case of something major
  • But nothing major eventuated, and so the 1973 Begg FM5 was sold to Alan McCully
  • McCully took the Begg FM5 to PDL in Christchurch and had Fred McLean, who by this time had parted ways with George Begg, complete the vehicle
  • McCully then drove the car in five race meetings, with a brilliant second place at the Levin international meeting undoubtedly being the highlight
  • McCully retired from racing and sold the 1973 Begg FM5 to Graham Baker, who had some success with the car before it headed offshore and across the ditch to Australia
  • Later bought by Lindsay O’Donnell and returned to Southland, the 1973 Begg FM5 was restored and has had an active F5000 career since.
